Barranquilla is plenty of places to visit. If you like museums start at the Museo del Caribe (Museum of Caribbean) at Parque Cultural (Cultural Park). It is an interactive museum, so you will no get bored, and you will surprise by holograms and tecnhnology while knowing nature, music, history, poetry, literature and dances of the Caribbean. Some events are placed at Parque Cultural where you can be seated at wooden chairs, of course if you are not dancing.

Next go to the Museo del Carnaval (Museum of Carnival) at the Casa del Carnaval (House of Carnival). It is very small but also interactive, you can see yourself with typical disguises of the carnival and send the picture to your email.

Our city has also a Modern Art Museum (Museo de Arte Moderno). It is a small and cosy one but not for long. It is planned to be a huge one next to the Museo del Caribe, you already can see the metal skeleton of the impressive construction. A picture of how would look like:

If you like all fashioned museums you will like Museo Romántico (Romantic Museum). It is in old house with carnival queen fancy dresses, old pictures and devices. But never try the twenties hats, when I was little I tried one in front of a old wooden mirror to image myself at the epoque. Big mistake I got itchs on my head for days.

Near by you can walk for the old neighborhood of the twenties with republican arquitecture of their massions knowed as las casonas del Prado Viejo.

Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción is a beautiful church with wooden ceiling and altar with old fashioned chandeliers. It is the prefered one to get married.
One of the most representative places at the city is the Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina and Plaza de la Paz. Some cultural events are placed there. The catedral has a very modern arquitecture with huge vitrals at the front, and at both sides. In the middle has a huge sculture of a chained Jesus. You will like to enter even if you are not religious.

In case you like to walking next to the river go to the Malecón del Río, you would need to take a taxi to get there but once there they are cops so you can feel safe no matter the hour.
Close by taxi it is the Intendencia Fluvial there is a restaurant inside but I have never try it to be honest. There is also a walk but near the Caño so in hot season there is such a bad smell I dont recommend it.

Near Barranquilla there is a mud volcano where you can swim Volcán del Totumo and have fun.
Puerto Velero or now called Marina de Puerto Velero is a beach near Barranquilla where people practice windsurfing, there are fancy restaurants and a marina with expensive boats. Also there is a Acuatic thematic park that cost COP 30,000.

Near Barranquilla is Puerto Colombia, a bohemian town. In its Malecón at the beach you mind find local art, also restaurants and ice cream shops from inmigrants mostly italians. It is used to be know for being one of the most important port at Latin America, but know its dock is in ruins and not suitable for visitors.
The neighborhood Las Flores has wooden floating restaurants close to the river Magdalena, also in this place you can take a train to go to Bocas de Ceniza (ash mouths) where you will see the river mount getting to the sea, because it dried to gray the blue sea.
In Salgar near a cliff you may find a castle, but it looks like more a mansion. Actually Castillo de Salgar was a fort called San Antonio built by spanish at the Colony. Now it is a restaurant, also used for events.

Close to the Museo del Caribe you will find the Customs Old Building (Antiguo Edificio de la Aduana) and the Montoya trolley car station (Estación Montoya). Inside you may find a public library and an art gallery, also it is used for events.

A non missing spot would be the Plaza San Nicólas, it is colourful church but it is only safe visiting during day light. It is quite tricky to get there. You may go to the Plaza de Bolívar and then walk to the few blocks right and then left. If you are looking for a old book here you will find street book sales.

Other beautiful church is the San Roque with a neogothic arquitecture.

Much people that visit the city are looking to learn salsa. But in Barranquilla the salsa is quite different from Cali. It is called Salsa Brava, because it is very fast with enphasis at percussion. The dance is separated between woman and men, because when it started Barranquilla was a very male chauvinist society, so respectful women where not allowed to go to these places to dance, so men danced alone and prove their skill with peculiar feet movement. Now women also enjoy the dance, but it is still more common to dance separated. One of these places to watch, listen and learn salsa is La Troja.

Before leaving you may like to buy handicrafts. At Romelio Martínez Stadium you may find a market of carnival handicrafs. In front there is the Joe Arroyo Statue at Musicians Park.

The zoo at Barranquilla (Zoológico de Barranquilla) is little compared to others, but you find 500 animals of 140 species.

The biggest soccer stadium in the country is in Barranquilla the Metropolitano Stadium. It resembles a big spider and it is very popular for locals and nationals that come to the city just to watch a very anxious soccer game of the national team or the local Junior. In front is the Shakira Statue.

La Cueva is a restaurant and a bar with live music, but also was a place where Gabriel García Márquez and other intelectuals met at the city.

Barranquilla cuenta con muchos lugares para visitar. Si te gustan los museos inicia tu recorrido en el Museo del Caribe en el Parque Cultural. Es un museo interactivo, asi que no te aburriras. Te sorprenderan los hologramas y la tecnología de este museo, donde aprenderás de la naturaleza, música, historia, poesía, literatura y danzas del Caribe. En el Parque Cultural se realizan algunos eventos culturales donde podrás sentante en sillas de madera, claro si no estas de pie bailando.

Luego pásate por el Museo del Carnaval en la Casa del Carnaval. Es pequeño pero también interactivo. Puedes verte a ti mismo difrazado de un traje representativo de carnaval y enviártelo a tu correo electrónico.

Nuestra ciudad también tiene un Museo de Arte Moderno (MAMB). Es pequeño y acogedor pero no será así por mucho tiempo, ya que se planea hacer una enorme estructura al lado del Museo del Caribe.

Si te gustan los museos vintage seguro debes visitar el Museo Romántico. Es una de las antiguas del Viejo Prado, cuenta con vestidos de gala de reinas de carnaval, fotografías antiguas y artefactos antiguos. Pero nunca intentes probar los sombreros de los años veinte. Cuando era pequeña probé uno frente a un espejo de madera. Grave error. Tuve picazón en mi cabeza por días.

Puedes caminar cerca en un barrio de los años veinte con arquitectura republicana conocidas como las casonas del Prado Viejo.

La bella Iglesia Inmaculada Concepción tiene techos y altares de madera con candelabros. Es la preferida por los barranquilleros para casarse.

Uno de los lugares más representativos de la ciudad es la Catedral Metropolitana Maria Reina and Plaza de la Paz. Algunos eventos culturales se realizan aquí. La catedral cuenta con una arquitectura moderna con grandes vitrales en el frente y en ambos costados. En el altar hay una escultura inmensa de un Jesús encadenado. Seguro querrás entrar aunque no seas religioso.

En caso quieras caminar cerca al río debes ir a Malecón del Río. Para llegar deberás llegar en taxi, pero una vez allí hay muchos policías que te harán sentir seguro no importa la hora.

Cerca se encuentra la Intendencia Fluvial . Dentro hay un restaurante, aunque para ser honesta nunca lo he visitado. También tiene un corredor para caminar pero no es recomendable ya que está al lado del caño y en temporada de calor tiene mal olor.

Cerca a Barranquilla hay un volcán de lodo Volcán del Totumo donde puedes nadar y divertirte.
Puerto Velero ahora se conoce como la Marina de Puerto Velero, es una playa cerca a Barranquilla donde la gente practica windsurfing. También hay restaurantes costosos y una marina con yates lujosos. Ahora cuenta con un Parque Acuático Temático Aqualand. El acceso al parque tiene un valor de COP 30,000.
Cerca a Barranquilla se encuentra Puerto Colombia, el cual se ha convertido en un rincón bohemio, con un Malecón frente a la playa con obras de artistas locales, restaurantes y heladerías de inmigrantes, en especial italianos. Puerto Colombia antes era famoso por su muelle que en los años veinte eran uno de los más importantes de Latinoamérica, sin embargo ya no se encuentra apto para el público dado su actual deterioro.

En el barrio Las Flores hay restaurantes en casas de maderas flotante sobre el río Magdalena. Aquí puedes tomar un tren para ir a Bocas de Ceniza, nombre con el se conoce esta desembocadura del río en el mar, ya que tiñe el agua cristalina en gris.
En un acantilado sobre las playas de Salgar se encuentra un castillo, aunque en realidad no luce como tal. Fue un fortín, llamado San Antonio, contruido por los españoles en la época de la colonia. Actualmente el Castillo de Salgar es un restaurante donde se realizan eventos.
Cercano al Museo del Caribe se halla el Antiguo Edificio de la Aduana y la Estación de tranvía Montoya. En su interior podrás encontrar una biblioteca pública y una galería de arte. También se usa para eventos.
La Plaza San Nicólas, es uno de esos lugares imperdibles. Tiene una iglesia colorida y rodeada de lugares históricos como el antiguo Banco Comercial de 1904 donde se emitían billetes. Se debe visitar sólo durante el día por seguridad. Llegar puede ser complicado al principio, debes llegar primero a la Plaza de Bolívar y de ahí caminar unas cuadras. Cerca a la plaza puedes encontrar ventas ambulantes de libros usados.

La Iglesia San Roque es particularmente bella con una arquitectura neogótica florentina, única en el país.

La mayoría de los extranjeros que visitan la ciudad, tienen como una de sus motivaciones aprender a bailar salsa. Sin embargo, les debo aclarar que la salsa barranquillera es muy diferente a la caleña. Aquí le conocemos como Salsa Brava, es más rápida y tiene énfasis en instrumentos de percusión. Se baila con los cuerpos separados de hombre y mujer. Esto es porque cuando inició en la ciudad, la sociedad barranquillera era muy machista, y las mujeres de buena familia no podía ir a los lugares de salsa, porque era muy mal visto. Entonces su baile fue de hombres que probaban su destreza con los peculiares movimientos de sus pies. Ahora las mujeres también disfrutan del baile, pero es más usual que sea un baile separados. Uno de estos lugares para ver, escuchar, y aprender a bailar salsa es La Troja.
Si gustas de comprar souvenirs y artesanías seguro querrás pasar por los alrededores del Estadio Romelio Martínez . Frente te encontrarás con la estatua al músico Joe Arroyo en el Parque de los Músicos.

El Zoológico de Barranquilla es relativamente pequeño comparado con otros, pero alcanza a albergar 500 animales entre 140 especies.

El Estadio Metropolitano, es el estadio de fútbol más grande de Colombia. Es muy popular en los partidos del equipo local Junior, e incluso muchos colombianos asisten en los partidos del equipo nacional. Frente a este se encuentra la estatua de Shakira.

La Cueva es un restaurante y bar con música en vivo, pero es también el lugar donde Gabriel García Márquez y otros intelectuales se reunían en la ciudad.
